Brazlian Wish Bracelets

It's finally happened!  After nearly TWO YEARS of being tied around my wrist, my Brazilian wish bracelet has fallen off:

Let's go back...two years ago I had an exchange student in my class, Thais, from San Paulo, Brazil.  As a Christmas gift, she gave me a wish ribbon that is a tradition in her country.

Someone gives the ribbon as a gift, wraps it around the recipients wrist, then ties three knots.  For each knot, the recipient makes a wish.  The bracelet must then be worn until it naturally disintigrates and falls off by itself.

Thais said she thought it would fall off in a few months.  Well, it's been just shy of two years and mine has just fallen off this week!  You can see it in the picture above...it's covered in paint and from two years worth of house-related projects and, well, just living life!  I'll say that 1 and a half of my wishes have already come true and I'm excited to see if the other 1 and a half happen, too!  You can read more about the wish bracelets on this travel blog.

Halloween Costumes

I spent the better part of today making my Halloween costume.  You'll have to wait until next week, however, for pictures of my creation! Even if I don't have a party to attend, I dress up for school.  Some of the students dress up but it's the faculty that seem to really go crazy with the costumes! I'm a big fan of homemade costumes over store bought, probably because I am always look for an excuse to think creatively! Here's a little Halloween costume history:

Halloween 1984:
Strawberry Shortcake!  My mother made my costume and apparently I accessorized with an Oscar the Grouch pin?  Cute nonetheless!

Halloween 2008:
I was a witch...not very creative but the hat was pretty cool because it had black feathers and a veil.  And I couldn't resist those awesome striped tights!  My fellow teachers Jessie and Mark were a referee and a 'nerd', respectively.

Halloween 2009:
Homemade Statue of Liberty costume!  Took me a while to make but totally worth it!  I won the costume contest at school that year! Can you guess what Donna is supposed to be?  Hint: her eyes are painted black.... A 'black-eyed pea'!

This was my second costume that year...I threw it together last minute with items around the house.  I printed the sheriff's badge on card stock and pinned it on.

Halloween 2010

Harry Potter!  This is my favorite costume thus far! I purchased the wig, glasses, tie, and wand from a party store.  The gown is my faculty gown that I wear to graduation each year and I found a Griffindor patch online and printed it on card stock, then taped to the gown. The shirt, sweater, and pants were things I already owned. The kids at school LOVED this outfit, too, and couldn't stop laughing!

What I Wore Wednesday...Pencil Skirts!

Time to link up to The Pleated Poppy for WIWW! I only have a few outfits this week but two of the three involve a pencil skirt from Target!

THURSDAY

I bought this skirt from Target as one of the few items in my 'back to school' shopping trip.  It needs to be hemmed slightly because I think it's just a tad too long on my 5-foot frame.  Shoes are from Payless and cardi is from Old Navy.

MONDAY
It was too late to get a good picture in natural light so please excuse the awful light and dust on the mirror highlighted by the flash!  Pencil skirt number two also comes from Target as does the cardi.  Shoes are pointy-toe kitten heel suede pumps from DSW. Clearly I'm in to animal print as illustrated by this skirt and the duffel bag behind me in the picture!

MYSTERY DAY
Boy do I look tired in this photo!  Probably why I can't even remember which day it was I wore this outfit!  Shirt and belt are from Kohls, pants are from Victoria's Secret.  Shoes...can I just say how much I LOVE these shoes?  Suede with patent leather details?  I saw these at Famous Footwear and they just screamed "Miss Rush"!

And one final pic for good measure...
This is what I put on just after coming home from work!  Comfy flannel pj bottoms from Victoria's Secret and a cozy sweatshirt from Kohls!

Pumpkin Pickin'

Now that my porch is painted, I set out to add some accessories, mainly in the form of some fun fall decor!  I'm really trying to buy local whenever I can so I headed out to Windy Hill Farm to pick out my pumpkins!

I opted for two small pumpkins, one orange and one cream colored.  Not sure if I'll get any trick or treaters this year so I thought two would do!  And for good measure, I added a mum, too!

Finally, the rocking chair took it's place back on one side of the porch!  The only thing I need now is a fun, colorful fall wreath for my door!

Apple Crisp

Since going apple picking a few weeks ago, I've been slowly working my way through my peck of apples. I've tried a couple different crisp recipes but my favorite is a classic from Betty Crocker.  I'm a big fan of oatmeal in my crisp and this one is simple and delicious!

I got to try out my new apple peeler and corer, which makes peeling those darn apples a breeze!  But, you have to use apples that are pretty crisp because mushy apples tend to be 'stripped' to much! And can I just mention how much I love my little pull out trash feature?  So cool!  Oh the joys of a new house!

While it's fresh from the oven, take a serving and put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top...perfection!  I made this latest batch the morning my dad came over and installed my garbage disposal; I thought he'd like a treat for all his labor!

What about you?
What's your FAVORITE apple crisp or apple recipe?

Me, Circa 1960

This is what I would look like if I were a character on Mad Men!

Just a little fun to start off this beautiful fall Saturday morning! You can 'Mad Men' yourself, too here.

The Porch: Part 3

Front porch gray paint DIY

After months, the porch is finally done! It went from plain, unstained cedar, to stained white railings, to stained dark gray floor! My inspiration for the floor color:

You can read more about how I chose the floor color here.  The white of the railings paired with the dark gray floor really make the color of the door and the siding 'pop'.  Next up, adding a wreath, some pumpkins, and a doormat! A big shout-out to my friend Katie who helped me paint!

WIWW

Linking up to The Pleated Poppy's What I Wore Wednesday & Real Momma, Real Style! The weather here in Maine has been going from one extreme to the other making my outfits a veritable 'potpourri' of seasons!  From a sweater and jeans on a 50 degree day, to shorts and a tee in highs around 80, my wardrobe's been getting a workout!

Thursday
Friday was a workshop day at school so I wore jeans because Thursday was practically Friday!  I love the blue/gray combination of this sweater from Target.  The jeans are from GAP outlet (long and lean) and  I made the felt flower from a tutorial found here.  The earrings are also from Target.

Sunday
80 degree weather while on a vacation at my family's ocean house!  What's more nautical than a navy and green striped tee?  Tee & Shorts: Old Navy, flip-flops from BASS.

Monday
Hiking at Petit Manan Wildlife Preserve

Tee: Old Navy
Jeans: Delias
Sneakers: Nike Shox

Tuesday
Back to reality...and work!

This floral dress from Target is really versatile.  In warmer weather I can wear it with sandals and in the fall & winter I pair it with tights and a cardi!

A Down East Maine Adventure

I'm back from a wonderfully relaxing long weekend with two of my best friends from college. We drove up the Maine coast on scenic Route 1 to my family's beach house in Milbridge (which is for rent each summer in case you're interested in visiting).  We stopped in Bar Harbor on the way for lunch and to visit my friend's aunt, who owns a lovely little inn!

The Seacroft Inn is in the perfect location...one block to town and one block to the beach!  It was nice to have a quick visit with Aunt Bunny while we were in town!

We arrived in Milbridge just in time to witness a spectacular sunset...

The next morning Beth and I had breakfast on the deck, overlooking the ocean.  As we ate, a bald eagle flew just overhead!  It was pretty amazing!  Our view from the deck...
After breakfast we explored the yard...I took pictures of the cool gravestones on the property that date back to the 1800s.  Look closely and you can see one says "Lost at sea"...can't take the history teacher out of me no matter where we are!

Beth, who's studying to become a Maine Master Naturalist, explored and identified flora and fauna...

When Tori arrived, we went down to the beach...
Because the house is located on an inlet, the entire 'beach' is covered in seashells that are brought in with each tide!

The next morning we went to Petit Manan Wildlife Preserve for a little hike.
The walking path is just gorgeous, particularly now that the leaves have changed! The weather this weekend was sunny and in the upper 70s EVERY DAY...IN MAINE...IN OCTOBER!  What an absolute treat is was indeed!

What I Wore Wednesday

I love that it's really starting to feel like fall here in Maine...well, sort of...this weekend it's suppose to be near 70!  Anyway, on to the outfits!

Last Wednesday

Pretty Ruffled Top: Target
Pants: Victoria's Secret, "Christie Fit"
Shoes: Marshall's
I love the ruffled details on this top.  My students made comments about it all day...they were pretty fascinated with it's construction!

Thursday

Sweater: Ann Taylor Loft
Giraffe-Print Dress: Target
Belt: Target
Necklace:  Hmmm, don't remember!
Shoes: Target

I love this outfit!  I'm a huge fan of animal print, but not the Jersey Shore spandex mini-skirt dress type!  This dress is actually a sleeveless tank style that wouldn't be appropriate for school but I've made it work-friendly by adding a cardi!

Monday (sorry, no pics from the weekend!)

Sweater: GAP
Plaid Shirt: Forever 21
Pants: GAP
Sandals: Old Navy

This outfit was so comfy!  Sometimes I don't want to do the pointed heels and the business-type dress pants...I just want to feel put together yet comfortable. I think the plaid shirt is so cute with the ruffles and feels 'fall' to me!

Tuesday

Sweater: Target
White Collared Shirt: Banana Republic Outlet
Tweed Plaid Skirt: Ann Taylor Loft
Shoes: TJ Max

I found this skirt on the clearance rack at the LOFT a few years back and think it's the cutest thing!  The pleats in the front are also in the back!  Plus, love the green/teal combo!
