Rug Sale!

I've been shopping for area rugs ever since moving in to my new house almost one year ago. I haven't purchased any since they always seem sooo expensive and I just couldn't commit to such a big purchase.  This morning I happened to be browsing online and came across RugsUSA.com.

Turns out they are having a HUGE Independence Day sale and a large selection of their rugs are 75% off PLUS free shipping!! I jumped on the chance to outfit my living room and bedroom with desperately needed area rugs!
I actually ordered three rugs but they were so inexpensive (just over $500 for three large area rugs) that I couldn't pass up the deal! I consider it a 'happy one year living in my house' present!

This damask rug will go in my bedroom...

And either the chevron or trellis rugs will make a home in the living room...

Obviously from looking at these rugs it can be deduced that I love the color gray!  I would rather keep my rug purchase a neutral color since I can always paint walls or add smaller, less expensive accessories to add pops of color.  They should be here in a week or two...fingers crossed that they look good!

WIWW: The Prom

Although it's been a couple months since I, along with my co-class advisor Donna, planned and chaperoned this year's prom, it's never too late for an outfit-related post!  Linking up to The Pleated Poppy for What I Wore Wednesday!

Can you spot me?  Yup, that's me...in the middle!  The other ladies are my fellow teachers/chaperones posing with some of our students a la 'Kardashian Christmas Card'!

I received a lot of compliments on my dress, a one shoulder silk georgette number from Ann Taylor.  The shoes, strappy silver sandals (love me some alliteration), are also from Ann Taylor.  Both of these items, I might add, were purchased for 40% off a few months ago! I don't usually wear one shouldered or strapless dresses, so this was a leap for me!

One more fun shot...

Life As of Late

School is officially out for the summer...some big changes having been happening around here, but I'll save the details for another post!  Once summer is in full swing, I'll post more about the myriad of projects I have planned.  For now, here's what I've been up to...

Fried dough and dinner at a summer carnival with a good friend...

Started training for my first 5k...I'm not really 'a runner', in fact, I don't like running at all!  However, I've always wanted to run a 5k just to prove to myself that I can! I'll keep ya posted!

Homemade chicken, goat cheese, pecan, and cranberry salad + Italian ice = perfect summer supper!

Catching a baseball game...the all-American past time! My cousin Nate was pitching...

Happy Summer to You!

Easy Black Bean Salsa Recipe

My mom's recipe for homemade black bean salsa is by far my favorite!  And pretty much anyone who's had it, raves about it and can't get enough! It's simple, fresh, and colorful.

Here's the recipe:
1 can whole corn, drained
1 can black beans, drained and well rinsed
1 red pepper, finely chopped
1 orange pepper or yellow pepper (using orange adds extra color) finely chopped
1 medium to large onion, finely chopped
1/2 bunch cilantro, finely chopped

Mix everything. Add vinegar and oil to taste ( I add more vinegar than oil)
Serve with Scoops chips!

Seriously, this is the BEST black bean salsa you'll ever make (or taste)!
Perfect for summer gatherings...ENJOY!

Coffee Table Makeover

So this post is looooong overdue!  Over February vacation I refinished my 'el cheapo' coffee and end tables, turning them both from a boring walnut color to a fun and modern navy blue!  I'm loving all things navy lately...

Navy Blue Coffee Table Makeover

All of the throw pillows that I made have navy color in the fabric as do the art prints above the couch.  The frames are on Ribba picture ledges from Ikea. My couch is a khaki green color, very difficult to coordinate with, but what better to go with green than navy blue?

Here's what the coffee table looked like 'before':

I used an electric sander to rough up the original varnish before painting two coats of Starless Night by Behr Ultra (from Home Depot, satin finish). I also used brushed nickel spray paint on the hardware.  The result is an inexpensive and easy way to spice up a super boring 'box store' table set!

Owl Miss You!

It's almost time for the school year to come to an end and I'm getting sentimental!  It always seems that just as I really get to know my students, they up and leave me for the next grade!  As a high school teacher I am lucky because I will get to have some of them again in my Sociology elective or see them if they join History Club. But still...they learn how I operate and I learn how they operate and then the year is over!

I wanted to make them a little farewell present as they head into summer so I searched for 'end of the year student gifts' and came across the cutest little things...

This is a free printable that's then wrapped around mini-chocolate bars!  I have 72 students this semester so this is a cost-effective little gift. Plus, they are just soooo cute!  They are a bit 'elementary school' but I find my high-schoolers love fun treats like this, too!

Linking up again (three weeks in a row...who hoo!) at The Pleated Poppy for What I Wore Wednesday!  I just love, love, love summer attire!  Since I live in Maine, I only have a few short months in which to sport white capris & flower prints, as illustrated in this week's outfit:

I wore this both to school (with a higher cut camisole under the shirt) and then out for dinner and drinks with friends on the weekend.  Any outfit that can work in both places is a winner! The shirt is from Old Navy (a few years back), cuffed white capris were purchased recently at Gap outlet, and the black wedges are also from Gap outlet (a few years ago).

An outtake...still fooling around with my wireless camera remote!
What do you think of the red lipstick?  Can I pull it off?
