Thrift Store Dresser Makeover

Summer vacation means lots of time for DIY projects! I've been slowly giving my living room a makeover and part of the transformation included finding a new focal point for my television wall. Instead of the TV 'hutch' that I bought a couple years ago, I wanted to find a long dresser, over which I would wall mount my flat screen. After finding a couple options at big-box furniture stores for close to $300, I stumbled upon the perfect piece to transform (only $90 at Salvation Army)...

I love the curved lines of the piece as well as the 9 drawers for storage purposes. After removing the old hardware and sanding the entire piece with a medium grit paper, I used a good quality Purdy brush to paint on all the curved edges and used a small foam roller to paint the top, sides, and drawer fronts. I had to go back and use a large foam roller for the top, however, because the small roller kept giving me stroke lines!

The paint color I used is called Birds Egg by Benjamin Moore and is the perfect shade of aqua/pale blue. It reads a bit more aqua in real life than in these photos, however, and I LOVE it! I had it mixed in a quart of Benjamin Moore Super Spec D.T.M. Acrylic Low Lustre paint, which provided the perfect amount of sheen (not too flat, not too glossy). It was close to $20 for a quart, however, I've used inexpensive paints on other furniture painting projects and boy did splurging on the good stuff make a difference!

I wanted to add more modern brushed nickel handles to contrast with the vintage curves of the dresser. The rectangle cup pulls were purchased for $4.50 a piece at Home Depot. I would recommend letting your piece dry for a good solid 4 days before putting on hardware or placing anything on top...waiting was the WORST part because I just wanted to see her in all her glory!

I've used painters tape to mark where I plan to wall mount the TV! The new color of the piece plays nicely with the blue accents in the chair I just picked up at Target as well as the light celadon green in the new rug! To see more pieces for my living room design, check out my Pinterest board! I'm THRILLED with how it's all coming together so far! The overall cost of the dresser (including paint and new hardware) was $150...a super bargain for a unique piece with character!

Summer Vacation Bucket List

Hello loyal readers of the Crafty Teacher Lady blog! I've been busy with the craziness that ensues at the end of every school year and have entered into summer vacation with a long list of things I'd like to accomplish! I have a difficult time just sitting around and if I'm at home, I feel compelled to tackle some sort of project. Here's my summer 'bucket list' (in no particular order):

1. Redecorate the Living Room
Of all the rooms in my house, the living room decor has never really thrilled me. So, I'm adding a bit of color and have found some new furniture pieces that I already'll look something like this:

2. Visit Peak's Island
Although I've lived in Maine almost my entire life, I've NEVER been to Peak's Island! I live just outside of Portland and am thus there almost every weekend, however, Peak's is accessed only by ferry service. It's a pretty place to visit and I'm making it a priority this summer!

3. Run a 10k
You may remember that last summer I used the Couch to 5k running plan to successfully train for and complete my first 5k. Since then, I've been a running machine and have actually learned to really love it (ok maybe not LOVE it but at least a don't MIND it). This summer my plan is to run my first 10k and was lucky enough to make it into the Beach to Beacon race lottery. It's a pretty challenging course but I'm excited to reach a new goal!

4. Go Horseback Riding
I've only done this once, when I was about 13, and I hated it. I think it's time I give those beautiful horses another, one of my friends really wants to go and I'm always up for trying new things!

5. Build a Deck & Patio
My house is almost two years old and I've lived without a deck for too long (yes, this is a want, not a need)! So, one of my friends has graciously offered to come and build a deck with me! Just bought a patio table and chairs from Target on super clearance in anticipation!

6. Go on a Road Trip
I'm going on a short trip to Burlington, Vermont to do a little mini 'foodie' tour! of course, Ben and Jerry's! Should be fun!

7. Read!!
I need to slow down and be OK with just sitting around and reading a good book! My favorite genre would have to be autobiographies...I just like reading about other people's lives through their own voices. My FAVORITE of all time is Tina Fey's Bossypants! I read it once every summer because it's just that funny!
8. Concert at Fenway
I'm SOOOOO excited about this best girlfriends and I are going to see Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z in concert at Fenway Park this summer!!! Should be a wicked fun time!
9. Eat at Holy Donut
This may sound like a weird item to list, but this donut shop has gotten rave reviews!! Since donuts are literally my favorite food on earth, a visit (or two) seems like a no-brainer!!

OK...I'll let you know how I do in terms of accomplishing these goals! Happy Summer!
